The Benedictine monastery was founded in the 11th century on a unique mountain of rock pinnacles, about 50 kilometres from Barcelona. It keeps La Moreneta, a dark-skinned Romanesque Virgin who is the patron saint of Catalonia and has drawn pilgrims for centuries.
The Escolania, one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, sings in the basilica at midday on many days of the school year. From the monastery, trails and two funiculars climb to hermitages and viewpoints above the rock walls.
