Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed it as a garden city for the sick: separate pavilions linked by underground tunnels and surrounded by gardens, in the belief that air and light helped healing. It was built between 1902 and 1930 and worked as a hospital until 2009.
After a long restoration it opened to visitors. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1997, with ceramic domes, mosaics, sculptures and stained glass on every pavilion, and it is the largest Modernista complex in the world.
