Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

Avenidas Novas

Calouste Gulbenkian, an oil magnate of Armenian origin, lived in Lisbon from 1942 until his death in 1955 and left the country his collection of some 6,000 pieces. The museum opened in 1969 and runs from ancient Egypt and Islamic art to Rembrandt, Rubens, Turner and a whole room of René Lalique jewellery.

It reopened on 18 July 2026 after a renovation. Around it is a 1960s garden of ponds, ducks and paths among the trees, one of the city's most peaceful spots; on the other side is the Modern Art Centre, remodelled by Kengo Kuma.
