It was first put up in temporary materials for the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition, and in 1960 rebuilt in stone for the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It is shaped like a caravel's prow, with 33 figures of navigators, kings, missionaries and chroniclers behind the prince.
On the ground in front is a marble compass rose with a world map marking the routes and dates of the Portuguese discoveries, a gift from South Africa. A lift climbs to the viewpoint at the top.
