The great hall of the Natural History Museum, with its arches and a skeleton hanging from the ceiling

South Kensington

Alfred Waterhouse designed the building, opened in 1881, as a cathedral to nature: its terracotta façade is covered in animals and plants, living ones in the west wing and extinct ones in the east. It holds some 80 million specimens.

In the great Hintze Hall, the skeleton of Hope, a 25-metre blue whale, has hung since 2017. The dinosaur gallery has an animatronic T. rex, and in the Red Zone an escalator passes through a giant globe up to the volcano and earthquake rooms.
