Louis IX, Saint Louis, had it built between 1242 and 1248 to hold the Crown of Thorns, which he had bought from the emperor of Constantinople for more than the building cost. It stands inside the old royal palace, now the Palais de Justice, and has two levels: the lower one for servants and the upper one for the king.
The upper chapel has fifteen windows about 15 metres tall with more than a thousand Bible scenes, and some two thirds of the glass is original 13th-century work. Classical concerts are held inside in the evenings.
