Aveiro, on a lagoon by the Atlantic, is laid out along canals, and the Central Canal is the liveliest. It is plied by moliceiros, brightly painted boats with curved prows that once harvested seaweed from the lagoon and now carry visitors.
Along the canal stand several early 20th-century Art Nouveau façades, one of them home to the Art Nouveau Museum. The local sweet is ovos moles, an egg-yolk cream in shell-shaped wafers.
