The castle was built in the 10th century to protect a monastery, and tradition holds that Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born here. That is why Guimarães calls itself «the cradle of Portugal», and a wall in the centre reads «Aqui nasceu Portugal».
Beside the castle stand the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, from the 15th century, and the small church of São Miguel. Guimarães's old town, a World Heritage Site, is one of the best preserved in the country.
