Legend says it was from this rock above the Vltava that Princess Libuše foretold the founding of Prague. It was a fortress from the 10th century, and the 11th-century Rotunda of St Martin is the oldest surviving building in the city. The present walls date from the 17th century.
In the cemetery, beside the Gothic Revival Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, lie Dvořák, Smetana, Mucha and Karel Čapek, and the Slavín tomb gathers figures of Czech culture. The casemates hold several original statues from Charles Bridge.
