It is a village in the municipality of Almonte, with sand streets instead of tarmac, rails for tying up horses outside the houses and the white shrine of the Virgen del Rocío, built in 1969. The Pentecost pilgrimage draws close to a million people; the rest of the year it is almost empty.
In front of the shrine spreads the Doñana marsh. From the waterside promenade you can see herons, spoonbills, ducks and often flamingos, especially in winter and spring, when the marsh holds water.
