Santiponce

Scipio Africanus founded it in 206 BC for the soldiers wounded at the battle of Ilipa, and it was the first Roman city in Hispania. Emperor Trajan was born here, and probably Hadrian too, who filled it with new buildings in the 2nd century.

Its amphitheatre, which held about 25,000 spectators, was one of the largest in the Empire, and the pits beneath the arena survive. In the streets of the new town lie the mosaic floors of houses such as the House of the Birds and the House of the Planetarium. The Dragonpit in «Game of Thrones» was filmed in the amphitheatre.
