Vienna is one of the few capitals with vineyards inside the city, and its wine taverns, the Heuriger, pour the latest vintage from their own vines. Mayer am Pfarrplatz fills a 17th-century house in Heiligenstadt where Beethoven spent the summer of 1817 while working on the Ninth Symphony.
You eat in a vine-shaded courtyard or wood-panelled rooms, choosing from a buffet of cold cuts, cheese, bread and spreads, roasts and salads. Wine is ordered by the quarter litre, in a jug or with soda.
