The Westerkerk tower rising above the Prinsengracht houses

Museums & culture · Amsterdam

Westerkerk

Jordaan

Designed by Hendrick de Keyser and finished in 1631 for Protestant worship, the church has the tallest tower in the centre, the 85-metre Westertoren, crowned with the imperial crown Maximilian of Austria granted to the city's coat of arms.

Rembrandt was buried here in 1669 in an unmarked grave whose exact location is unknown. Anne Frank wrote in her diary about the bells she heard from the annex, and the square next door has a small statue of her and the Homomonument.
