Adriano Telles opened it in 1905 on Rua Garrett to sell Brazilian coffee, and it is said to have popularised the «bica», Lisbon's name for an espresso. Inside it keeps its 1920s Art Deco décor, with mirrors, dark wood and paintings by Portuguese modernists.
It was a meeting place for writers and artists, Fernando Pessoa among them. Since 1988 his bronze statue has sat at a table on the terrace, with an empty chair beside it for anyone who wants a photo.
