The neo-Gothic iron tower of the Santa Justa Lift between Baixa buildings

Santa Justa Lift

Baixa

It was designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, born in Porto, and opened in 1902. It ran on steam at first and on electricity from 1907. The 45-metre iron tower has neo-Gothic arches and two wooden cabins, and at the top a walkway links it with Largo do Carmo, beside the convent ruins.

It has been out of service since September 2025, after the Glória funicular accident, while all of Lisbon's historic lifts are inspected. In autumn 2026 Carris gave no reopening date, although its inspection is the furthest along.
