Baltazar Roiz Castanheiro opened it in 1829 on Praça da Figueira, and the family still runs it. It is credited with bringing bolo-rei, the Portuguese Christmas king cake, to Portugal from a French recipe, and in December people queue to buy it.
The ground floor keeps its 19th-century counters, mirrors and wooden display cases, full of pastéis de nata, queijadas, pão de ló and egg sweets. Upstairs is a tearoom with tables.
