It is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, at the far end of the Sintra hills. The cliffs drop some 140 metres into the Atlantic, and a monument topped with a cross bears Camões's line: «Here, where the land ends and the sea begins».
The lighthouse, from 1772, is one of the oldest in Portugal. Around it there is only scrub, dirt paths to the edge and, often, strong wind and fog, which can roll in even when Lisbon is sunny.
