Before you go
Trains leave Rossio station and take about 40 minutes. From Sintra station, the 434 loop bus climbs to Pena Palace. Book Pena in advance: the palace runs fixed entry times with no late admission, and summer weekends sell out.
About a 15-minute walk from Sintra's centre. Book ahead in high season, and head down the initiation well first, before a queue forms on the stairs.
A bus runs from Sintra to Cabo da Roca and on to Cascais. Praia da Rainha is right in the centre of Cascais, and trains back to Cais do Sodré leave from Cascais station. Bring a layer: the cape is often windy and misty even when Lisbon is sunny.
On the same train line, halfway between Lisbon and Cascais. It's the big beach of the area, good for a lazy day or a first surf lesson.
