It is the longest beach on the Cascais line, over a kilometre of wide sand ending at the 16th-century fort of São Julião da Barra. Open to the Atlantic, it nearly always has waves and is one of Portugal's most popular surf beaches, with several schools along the promenade.
There is a seafront promenade, beach bars and restaurants, and in summer Lisboetas pack it at weekends. The water is cold all year, even in August.
