Neo-Gothic palace of Quinta da Regaleira surrounded by greenery

Quinta da Regaleira

Sintra

Millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a keen esotericist, commissioned the estate from Italian set designer Luigi Manini, who built it between 1904 and 1910. The neo-Manueline palace has towers and gargoyles, but people come for the gardens, full of Templar, Masonic and alchemical symbols.

The initiation well drops about 27 metres down a spiral staircase with nine landings, linked to the circles of Dante's Inferno. From the bottom, dark tunnels lead out to a grotto and a lake crossed by stepping stones.
