Yellow and red towers of Pena Palace above the Sintra hills

Palácio da Pena

Sintra

King Ferdinand II, German by birth, bought the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery on top of the hills in 1838 and had a fantasy palace built on them, finished around 1854. It mixes medieval towers, Moorish domes, Manueline windows and a triton holding up an arch, all painted red, yellow and grey.

Inside, the rooms are kept as the royal family left them in 1910. The surrounding park covers some 85 hectares of forest with trees from all over the world, lakes and paths up to the Cruz Alta, the highest point of the hills.
