St Paul's Cathedral

City

The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed the medieval cathedral, and Christopher Wren built the new one between 1675 and 1710. Its dome, about 111 metres high, was London's tallest point for over two centuries and survived the 1940 Blitz, when its image amid the smoke became a symbol.

You climb 257 steps to the Whispering Gallery, where a whisper against the wall carries to the far side, and 528 to the Golden Gallery at the top. The crypt holds Nelson, Wellington and Wren himself.
