It rises on a rocky spur where the Eresma and Clamores rivers meet, at the tip of the old town, shaped like the prow of a ship. It was a residence of the kings of Castile, and Isabella I set out from here in 1474 to be proclaimed queen in the Plaza Mayor.
After a fire in 1862 it was restored with the pointed slate towers that make it so recognisable today. The visit takes in halls with Mudéjar coffered ceilings, the Hall of Kings and the Museum of the Royal Artillery College.
