Ferdinand VI founded it in 1755 and Charles III moved it in 1781 to its current site beside the Paseo del Prado, laid out by Sabatini and Juan de Villanueva. Today it belongs to Spain's national research council and is still a research centre as well as a garden to stroll in.
It is arranged in stepped terraces holding thousands of species: centuries-old trees, roses, medicinal plants and a greenhouse of tropical and desert plants. It is one of the quietest corners of the centre, a few steps from the bustle of the Prado.
