It opened in the late 19th century on the corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain and rue Saint-Benoît, named after a statue of the goddess Flora that stood opposite. The Art Deco décor, with red banquettes, mahogany and mirrors, dates from the 1930s.
During the Second World War, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir wrote here almost daily on the heated first floor. Since 1994 it has awarded its own literary prize, the Prix de Flore.
