It opened in 1628 and is the oldest covered market in Paris. Its name comes from the orphanage next door, whose children wore red, the colour of charity. It is hidden behind a gateway on rue de Bretagne in the northern Marais.
Among greengrocers, cheesemongers and florists are food stalls from around the world, with shared tables under the awnings: Moroccan, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian or Caribbean. One of the best known is Alain's sandwich stall, where he builds them in front of you while chatting with the queue.
