It opened in 1876 in Palais Ferstel, a building modelled on Venetian palaces that once housed the stock exchange and a bank. Before the First World War it was where Vienna's intellectuals met: the poet Peter Altenberg, who gave it as his address, architect Adolf Loos, Freud and an exiled Trotsky, who played chess here.
It closed during the Second World War and reopened decades later, restored with its vaults, marble columns and chandeliers. By the entrance, a figure of Peter Altenberg still sits at his table.
