Before you go

How to see Vienna's essentials

  1. Schönbrunn at opening time

Buy a timed palace ticket on the official site and arrive when it opens, before the tour groups. The gardens and the walk up to the Gloriette are free.

  2. The centre in one day on foot

The cathedral, Hofburg, Opera and Café Central are all within ten minutes' walk of each other. Save the Kunsthistorisches Museum, across the Ring, for the afternoon.

  3. Timed entry at the Belvedere

The Upper Belvedere, home of The Kiss, uses time-slot tickets; general admission is around €23 and the price varies by day.

  4. The wheel at dusk

The Prater is a metro ride away (Praterstern). The park is free to enter; the Ferris wheel is paid separately.
