The Belvedere

Landstraße

Prince Eugene of Savoy, the general who beat the Ottomans, had Lukas von Hildebrandt build these two palaces between 1712 and 1723: the Lower to live in and the Upper for receptions, linked by terraced gardens. In the Upper Belvedere's Marble Hall, the 1955 treaty restoring Austria's independence was signed.

Today it's the museum of Austrian art, with the world's largest Gustav Klimt collection, led by The Kiss and Judith. There are also works by Schiele and Kokoschka, David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's character heads.
