Joseph Maria Olbrich built it in 1897-98 for the Secession, the group of artists led by Klimt who broke away from academic art. Above the door is their motto: 'To every age its art, to art its freedom.' The dome is made of some 3,000 gilded laurel leaves, and the Viennese promptly nicknamed it 'the golden cabbage'.
The basement holds the Beethoven Frieze, painted by Klimt in 1902 for an exhibition about the composer: 34 metres of painting inspired by the Ninth Symphony. The upstairs galleries host changing contemporary art shows.
