Before you go

How to see Vienna's architecture

  1. Karlsplatz, three in one

The Karlskirche, the Secession and Otto Wagner's metro pavilions are all on the same square or two minutes apart. The Naschmarkt starts just behind.

  2. Enter the Hofburg via Michaelertor

Go in under the dome on Michaelerplatz and cross the courtyards to Heldenplatz, passing the Riding School, the Library and the Volksgarten on the way.

  3. Hundertwasser from outside

People live in the house, so you can't go in. Across the street, Hundertwasser Village has shops and loos decorated by the same artist.

  4. No lift in the south tower

You climb the cathedral's south tower on foot, up more than 300 steps. The shorter north tower has a lift and houses the great Pummerin bell.
