Emperor Charles VI vowed to build it during the plague of 1713, and it went up between 1716 and 1737 to a design by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, completed by his son. It's dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, protector against the plague.
The façade combines a Greek temple portico, a great green dome and two columns modelled on Trajan's Column in Rome, with spiral reliefs telling the saint's life. Inside, the dome is covered in frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr.
