The central aisle of the Naschmarkt, between the market's permanent stalls

Shopping · Vienna

Naschmarkt

Mariahilf

The market settled here in the 19th century over the Wien river, which was covered as it passed through the city, and the permanent stalls you see were built between 1910 and 1916. It stretches for nearly a mile between the Linke and Rechte Wienzeile avenues.

There are stalls of fruit and vegetables, spices, cheese, olives, vinegars and pickles, bakeries and lots of small restaurants serving Austrian, Turkish, Israeli or Japanese food. On Linke Wienzeile, facing the market, stand two Otto Wagner apartment houses, one covered in flowered tiles, the Majolikahaus.
