Kunsthistorisches Museum

Ringstrasse

Franz Joseph opened it in 1891 to house the Habsburg art collections, facing its twin, the Natural History Museum. The main staircase is a show of marble and gold, and between its arches are paintings by a young Gustav Klimt.

The gallery holds the world's largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, including Hunters in the Snow and The Tower of Babel, Velázquez's portraits of the Infanta Margarita, Vermeer's The Art of Painting, plus Raphael, Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio. The Kunstkammer has treasures such as Benvenuto Cellini's golden salt cellar.
