State Hall of the National Library

Innere Stadt

Charles VI had this hall built for the court library between 1723 and 1726, to a design by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach completed by his son. It's almost 80 metres long and lined with walnut bookcases holding some 200,000 old volumes, including Prince Eugene of Savoy's library.

Under the dome, frescoed by Daniel Gran with an allegory of the emperor, stands a statue of Charles VI surrounded by Habsburgs. Seventeenth- and 18th-century terrestrial and celestial globes are set around the hall.
