The palace was home to Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, Maria Theresa's son-in-law, who built one of the world's largest collections of drawings and prints, now around a million works, from Dürer to Rembrandt. The Habsburg state rooms have been restored with their furniture and silk wall hangings.
The permanent collection, on loan from the Batliner family, runs through modern painting from Monet, Renoir and Cézanne to Picasso, Chagall and the Expressionists. A canopy by Hans Hollein marks the entrance, and the terrace overlooks the Opera and Albertinaplatz.
