Maria Theresa and Francis I's bronze double sarcophagus in the Imperial Crypt

Museums & culture · Vienna

Imperial Crypt

Innere Stadt

Since 1633, the Habsburgs have been buried in the crypt of the Capuchin Church on Neuer Markt. Around 150 family members lie here, twelve emperors among them, in sarcophagi ranging from plain to wildly Baroque, with crowned skulls and battle scenes. The last burial was Otto von Habsburg's in 2011.

The main hall holds the double sarcophagus of Maria Theresa and her husband Francis Stephen, by Balthasar Moll, showing them sitting up on Judgement Day. Nearby lie Franz Joseph, Sisi and their son Rudolf, side by side.
