The name means 'ditch': this was the moat of the Roman camp, filled in during the Middle Ages. Today it's a broad pedestrian street between the cathedral and Kohlmarkt, lined with 19th-century buildings and shops with centuries of history.
In the middle rises the Plague Column, vowed by Emperor Leopold I during the epidemic of 1679 and finished in 1693: a tower of marble clouds, angels and saints, with the emperor kneeling in prayer near the base.
