St. Stephen's Cathedral

Innere Stadt

From the 13th-century Romanesque church survive the Giant's Door and the two Heathen Towers on the façade. The rest is Gothic: Rudolf IV laid the foundation stone of the rebuilding in 1359, and the 136-metre south tower was completed in 1433. The north tower was never finished and now houses the Pummerin, the cathedral's great bell.

The roof is laid with some 230,000 glazed tiles that form the Habsburg double-headed eagle. A fire at the end of the war in 1945 destroyed it, and it was rebuilt with donations from across Austria. Beneath the church, the catacombs hold urns with the entrails of several Habsburgs.
