It opened in 1823 on the site of the city walls blown up by Napoleon's troops, one of the first court gardens open to the public. At its centre stands the Theseus Temple, a scaled-down copy of a temple in Athens.
The rose garden holds thousands of bushes in hundreds of varieties, each with its name plate. In one corner is the memorial to Empress Elisabeth, Sisi, a seated marble statue in its own small garden.
