English engineer Walter Bassett built it in 1897 for Franz Joseph's jubilee, and for decades it was among the tallest Ferris wheels in the world. It burned in 1944 and was rebuilt with 15 cabins instead of 30. Orson Welles's famous scene in The Third Man was filmed in one of them.
It stands at the entrance to the Prater, the old imperial hunting grounds that are now a vast public park. Next to the wheel is the Wurstelprater funfair, free to enter, and from there the Hauptallee, a chestnut avenue about five kilometres long.
