From the 14th century this was home to the Beguines, unmarried Catholic women who lived in community without taking nun's vows. The last one died in 1971, but the houses around the courtyard are still lived in, today by single women.
The courtyard holds Het Houten Huys, from around 1528, one of the two wooden houses left in the centre. There are also two churches: the Engelse Kerk, given to English and Scottish Presbyterians in the 17th century, and opposite it a Catholic chapel once hidden behind a house front.
