It opened in 1670 on Spui square and is one of Amsterdam's oldest bruin cafés, brown cafés, named after walls and ceilings darkened by centuries of smoke. Hoppe looks as it always has: wood panelling, gin barrels behind the bar and sand on the floor.
It is a beer and jenever bar, jenever being Dutch gin, where office workers, students and locals mix. As soon as the weather is fine, people drink standing on the pavement outside.
