It fills a mid-16th-century timber house at the start of the Zeedijk, one of only two wooden houses left in the centre; the other is in the Begijnhof. Building in wood was banned after the great fires, and the facade shows it, narrower and plainer than the brick ones around it.
The story behind the name is that this was an inn for sailors who, short of money, paid with the monkeys they brought back from their voyages. Inside it is a small, dark brown café full of old curios.
