De Waag was built in 1488 as the Sint Antoniespoort, one of the gates in the medieval wall. When the city outgrew its walls, it became the Nieuwmarkt weigh house, and the guilds met on the upper floors; the surgeons had their anatomy theatre there.
Today the ground floor is a café-restaurant with beamed ceilings, candlelit at night, and a terrace on the square. It is open from breakfast until late, so it works for a coffee or for dinner.
