The black, leaning house of Café De Sluyswacht beside the canal

Restaurant · Amsterdam

Café De Sluyswacht

Jewish Quarter

This little black house from 1695 belonged to the keeper of the Sint Anthonie lock, which controlled the water of the Oudeschans canal. It sinks and leans visibly to one side on the soft ground, and is one of the most photographed sights in this part of town.

Today it is a small café with a terrace over the water, looking along the canal to the Montelbaanstoren tower, with Rembrandt's house next door. It serves beer, wine and snacks.
