This proeflokaal, a tasting house, was founded in 1679 on the Pijlsteeg, a narrow alley behind Dam Square. Amsterdam's distillers kept rooms like this so customers could taste their jenevers and liqueurs before buying.
The room is small, with no tables and old casks and bottles behind the bar. Dozens of house jenevers and liqueurs with curious names are poured into tulip glasses filled right to the brim. The shop next door sells the bottles.
