Joan Miró founded it himself, and it opened in 1975 in a building by his friend the architect Josep Lluís Sert: white volumes, patios and skylights that let in the Mediterranean light. It holds more of the artist's work than any museum in the world.
The route runs from his early paintings to the large canvases and tapestries of his final years, with sculptures on the terraces and a room for Calder's Mercury Fountain. The roof terraces look out over Montjuïc park and the city.
