The National Art Museum of Catalonia occupies the Palau Nacional, built for the 1929 International Exhibition at the top of Montjuïc. It covers a thousand years of Catalan art, from Romanesque to the mid-20th century.
Its jewel is the collection of Romanesque wall paintings, one of the finest in the world: frescoes removed from Pyrenean churches in the early 20th century to save them, such as the Christ in Majesty from Sant Climent de Taüll, mounted in apses that recreate the originals.
