La Rambla follows the bed of an old stream that ran beside the medieval wall, and today it is a tree-lined promenade of just over a kilometre between Plaça de Catalunya and the Columbus monument at the port. The Gothic Quarter lies on one side and the Raval on the other.
Along the way are the Canaletes fountain, said to make whoever drinks from it return to Barcelona, La Boqueria, the Liceu opera house, opened in 1847, and a Miró mosaic set into the pavement at the Pla de l'Os.
